CLEAR LAKE — The music department at Clear Lake High School is one in 33 nationwide to be named as a 2005 Grammy Signature School and awarded a $2,000 grant.
The Grammy Signature School awards, which were announced earlier this month, are designed to honor exceptional music programs in public high schools across the country. More than 21,000 schools competed this year in the annual Grammy Foundation competition. This was the first year Clear Lake High School participated in the music contest.
“It is an honor to be selected,” said Bryan Buffaloe, orchestra director for Clear Lake High School. “We’ve been competing against performing arts schools so for a public school to be selected says a lot. Everyone is very excited.”
The application process for the Grammy award required Clear Lake High School to submit recordings, past concert programs, videos of performances and a list of all repertoire performed by the orchestra, band and choral classes. The school was not required to perform in-person during the judging process, which lasted about four months.
Clear Creek school district spokesperson Carrie Taylor said more than 520 students are involved in the music department at Clear Lake High School. In addition to the school’s band, orchestra and choir classes, Taylor said Clear Lake High School also offers quality ensembles in percussion, SoundWaves show choir and the Full Symphony Orchestra, which consists of top orchestra and band players.
The music department plans to use the $2,000 grant awarded to the school on program enhancement, including equipment, instruments and technology. Buffaloe said the music department’s goal is for the high school to achieve this honor every year. The department also hopes to be named a National Signature School, he said, which is the Grammy Foundation’s highest award and includes a $25,000 grant.
“Hopefully this puts us one step closer to becoming the overall winner next year,” Buffaloe said. “We’ve always had an outstanding music program, and we hope people are finally going to be able to see that.”
