Superman. He’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. And, he does it all with perfect hair.

Did you know he is also the ideal spokesperson? This seems to be the thinking behind the 100+ companies that are partnering with the upcoming film, Man of Steel. While cross promotions are nothing new, the sheer number of these partners is staggering, even for Hollywood. The film has already seen profits of more than three-fourths of its budget from these partnerships alone.

From Chrysler and Walmart, to Nokia and Twizzlers, it seems that every company is riding the capetails of America’s hero. Sears will even have Superman crashing through one of their stores during the movie,

and Warby Parker created an official Clark Kent-inspired pair of glasses (which were sold out last time I checked).

In the end, whether or not these promotions have any positive effect on either the movie or its partners, one thing is certain. Man of Steel is set to be the most action-packed, two-and-a-half hour commercial of the summer.

I spent June 6-9 in Phoenix, Arizona, attending Admerica, the American Advertising Federation’s national conference. I attended this conference, because I am the incoming president of Ad 2 Houston, which is an advertising organization for those 32 and younger. Guest speakers included the Founder and CEO of Mashable, CCO of Leo Burnett, SVP of Marketing for Allstate Insurance, and the former CEO of The Interpublic Group of Companies. But, let’s get to the stuff that you are interested in: ADDYs!

The ADDY Awards is the world’s largest advertising competition. This was the last official year for the award to be called an ADDY. An industry that is known for rebranding is rebranding its own award. It will now be called “American Advertising Awards.” Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the new award:

I recently spent the Summer Friday Fun Day working from home. Since it was my first experience working from home, I took notes.

PROS

  1. Sleeping in.
  2. Not needing to get dressed or wage war on Houston traffic, I started work sooner. Before 8 a.m., coffee wasbrewed and I was logged in.
  3. Everyone loves his own bathroom.
  4. Working outside in the beautiful summer weather.
  5. Comfy couch, recliner, and dare I say bed … to work in.

Cons

  1. Little opportunity to collaborate.
  2. Mounting “home” distractions. Pets, TV, fridge full of food, etc. Ahhh!
  3. I didn’t feel “in control” out of the office. Maybe it’s OCD? Who knows what could happen whilst away!
  4. I missed my coworkers! FKMers are truly a special group of people.

Verdict: Working from home offers many personal comforts, but my ability to work efficiently, and effectively collaborate with others is maximized in the office. Personally, Office wins a 7 game series, 4 to 3.

Hobby of choice: Gardening - I love designing garden and outdoor spaces as well as growing ornamental and edible plants.

How did you get into it? I come from a long line of serious garden hobbyists. My grandparents on both sides were ornamental and vegetable gardeners and so are my parents. Gardening is a pretty common hobby in Pennsylvania where I grew up because there are really only 3 months out of the year you can enjoy the outdoors without being cold.

Favorite thing about it? I enjoy the creative part of gardening – researching ideas for inspiration (Pinterest), conceptualizing the design and then finding supplies to bring the concept to life … so, shopping.

How does it inspire you? Gardening is a fun challenge because you have to blend art with science. I’m inspired by the fact that it makes me think of practicality.

Why should everyone do it? It’s very fulfilling to grow and cook with your own herbs and veggies; it’s good exercise, and it’s very relaxing.

This month's theme? Work outside the office.
